|Opera:||Cosi van tutte|
OperaPulse’s Aria of the Week – What defines an operatic moment in your everyday life? You may identify with this character and her truly operatic, if not over-dramatic, moment – losing someone you love. Well, Dorabella, from Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte, hasn’t exactly lost her fiance, but he has “gone off to war.” In her aria, Smanie implacabili, she frantically sings of her grief of his departure. She bemoans that the sadness will cause her to die. A little over the top, no? Very operatic indeed.
Smanie implacabili is somewhat of a right of passage for mezzo-sopranos that specialize in Mozart; it allows the lyric quality of the voice to soar and highlights the singers acting abilities. Enjoy!
