coópera: Project Opera of Manhattan

coópera: Project Opera of Manhattan is a one-of-a-kind company run and maintained completely by emerging artists for emerging artists. Founded in 2006 as a bold response by young artists to the opera industry machine, coópera returns opera to its roots: a conversation between artists and their audience. We entertain, move and inspire by telling our stories in music, and we approach productions in a unique cooperative way that results in a collective creation.

Opera for the People
The Power of Many

Almost five years ago, I founded this company hoping to provide an opportunity for myself and fellow young artists to perform and create, in every discipline involved with opera production. Our goal was to have a cooperative exclusively of young artists, to focus on artistic excellence, minus the unnecessary fanfare that usually comes with it. Four years, seven productions and a recital series later, we have become the resident company at The Players, a New York City landmark of the arts.

Founded by young artists for young artists, coópera believes in opera for the people. We believe that the average person can be the driving force behind our endeavor. And it is because of that that we launched the Facebook/Twitter $10 Challenge a while back: because it is not about how much you can give, but about how many people we can get interested, involved and willing to cooperate. With 700+ friends on Facebook (which I have), if each and every single one of those friends would pledge $10 to the company, they would single-handedly sponsor an entire production. Let’s think about that.

One of our biggest convictions is that quality is achieved through simplicity. So you can rest assured that every dime, every penny that you give, will go directly to support what’s on the stage and nothing else.
