“…bel canto, which of course as you well know, is not just beautiful singing. It is a very hard training; it is a sort of a straight-jacket that you’re supposed to put on, whether you like it or not. I have been obsessed with Callas since the age of sixteen, both for her musicianhood and her absolutely fascinating life. I always turn to her recordings first when learning a new piece of repertoire, and even the later ones that show the premature aging of her voice never fail to give an absolutely stunning rendition of the music. She was undeniably the defining artist of the golden age of opera.
