|Opera:||L'Italiana in Algeri|
OperaPulse’s Aria of the Week – An opera that deserves more attention than it receives is Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers). The funny thing about L’Italiana in Algeri is that the female lead is rescuing the male lead from his perilous situation; a situation only stumbled upon after his attempts to rescue her! In the aria “Cruda sorte” (Cruel fate), our italian girl, Isabella, sings of the danger that comes with loving her Lindoro (tenor, male lead), but that currently, the danger is no match to her wit.
As is in most cases with Rossini, he creates a strong-willed mezzo and composes difficult coloratura arias that are always crowd pleasers. Enjoy the star-studded list of mezzos below! Do you have a favorite? Let us know.
